Crankshaft Modelling at Engineering Materials Live

When motorcycle manufacturer BMW Motorrad set out to reduce lead times in the crankshaft design of some of its engines, Engineering Materials Live exhibitor Altair Engineering delivered an ideal solution with its Altair SimLab programme.

The BMW motorcycle offering includes a variety of models and engine types, all being manufactured concurrently and including ‘boxer’ twins, single cylinder machines, parallel twins, across-the-frame four cylinder powerplants and even an inline six cylinder engine. 

Prior to discovering Altair SimLab and automating its crankshaft modelling process, the BMW Motorrad team had been outsourcing its engine and component modelling, experiencing a typical turnround time of between one and two weeks. Now, by doing the work in-house using Altair SimLab, this time has been reduced by around 80% on crankshaft modelling, and associated processes that previously took about an hour on a four-cylinder engine design now takes just 10 minutes. Further advantages were also evident, all of which can be discussed on the Altair SimLab stand at the forthcoming Engineering Materials Live event on March 12th.
